An Interview with Frank Kozik at Juxtapoz

By Sama Team | October 28, 2009

Juxtapoz published a very interesting interview of Frank Kozik. It was during The Art of Rebellion, an art show in NYC featuring 10 iconic rock poster artists, and Juxtapoz got a chance to speak with renowned artist, Frank Kozik. They talked about the artistic process, the state of the music industry, and his Kid Robot toys.   Kozik's quick bio (from Wikipedia):   Frank Kozik was born in Madrid, Spain. At the age of 14 he moved to the United States and settled in Austin, Texas. Credited with single handedly reviving the "lost" art of the concert poster, Frank's creative career grew largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin's growing underground rock scene in the mid-eighties. Starting with black and white flyers for friends' bands posted on telephone poles, his reputation grew as an artist whose work was graphically compelling as well as culturally gripping. Kozik has done over 60 gallery shows worldwide, with multiple exhibits in Tokyo and London. Kozik has done graphic design for dozens of major companies such as Nike, BASF and Gatorade. He also directed music videos for Soundgarden and Mint Condition.   From the interview about Kozik's Smorkin’ Labbit toys we really like at the Gazette:   Why is your line of smoking rabbits for Kid Robot called Smorkin’ Labbit, rather than Smokin’ Rabbit? Why did you change the spelling?   Basically, like ten years ago when the first one came out in Japan, the Japanese company was like, “What is the name of character?” and I’m like, “Smokin’ Rabbit”, and of course, they Japped it out and it became “Smorkin’ Labbit”, which is so perfect. So they fucked up, and I thought “their fuck-up was way cooler than my name, so I’m just gonna steal it.”   Go read the interview, and also check our his official website, whether you already know Frank Kozik or not!

AaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH! Kozik is my favorite artist when it comes to toys! I discovered him in 2007 (July or August) after Max published a post on her blog about toys. Smorkin’Labbit are great although I don’t like the last ones. But the one that illustrates this post in my favorite, big size.

I’m going to read the interview right away!! :)

Same here, I only know Kozik by his work with toys. He’s renowned in the United States but not that much in France. I like his toys but they are a little bit repetitive…… Don’t you think?

Yes Arnold, it was in July, I remember perfectly!

Since then, I have also been contaminated and I like toys too. But they are quite expensive. The bigger they are, the more they cost :)
