Keith Haring’s 1985 Mural at Deitch Projects

By Sama Team | February 10, 2010

In 1985, Keith Haring painted a 70-foot-long mural for the South of Market Childcare Center (SOMACC) in San Francisco. Today the wall is exposed at Deitch Projects (18 Wooster Street, New York), until February 16, 2010. Keith Haring is unquestionably one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century, mixing Abstract Expressionism and Pop in a very unique way.   Information about the exhibition at Deitch Projects (visit website):

Deitch Projects is pleased to announce the installation of Keith Haring’s 70 foot long mural painted in 1985 for the gym of the South of Market Childcare Center (SOMACC) in San Francisco. The mural is one of 16 public works painted at hospitals and children’s centers around the world during the artist’s lifetime. Painted in one day, the mural incorporates cartoon characters and animals inspired by the artist’s childhood drawings The mural was dismantled in September 2006 when SOMACC lost its lease and moved to a new location. South of Market Child Care, Inc (SOMACC) is a non-profit childcare center that serves pre-school children from the SOMA neighborhood in San Francisco.

If you live in New York and like Keith Haring's amazing graphic approach, then don't miss the show. We know someone who is an admirer of Haring's work, and she may even take a plane (or a boat...) to see the mural. You can read more about this 'someone we know' in her post: Annie Leibovitz, Susan Sontag, Sarajevo… and Keith Haring.

Why (and how) did they removed the mural from the South of Market Childcare Center in San Francisco?? Was the building demolished?

Great, I remember the post Max published on her blog. It was about Annie Leibovitz and she mentioned Keith Haring. At that time, I didn’t know much about him and either about Annie Leibovitz.

I have learned a lot reading Max’s blog :P

I like Keith Haring, that’s an interesting news although I wouldn’t be able to see the show since I live in France…. Maybe the gallery in New York will borrow the mural for a foreign exhibition in Paris. I would love that ;)

I’m afraid they won’t move the painted mural for awhile. They may be afraid it will break into pieces

You’re right Ponditi, it would be very dangerous to move it again…..

Keith Haring initiated a new kind of art, street art at a time when graffiti was badly considerated.

Like Juliette, I wish the show was in Paris instead of New-York…
