The Rotating Kitchen by Zeger Reyers

By Sama Team | December 3, 2009

We were very intrigued, to say the least, when we watched the video of Dutch artist Zeger Reyers' installation "Rotating Kitchen". The introduction says: 'The Rotating Kitchen by Zeger Reyers was put into motion during the opening of the exhibition Eating the Universe at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany, last Friday. It will keep rotating slowly until February 28th 2010'.

It's part of the program "Eating the Universe. Food in Art" at Germany’s Kunsthalle Düsseldorf that features a whole series of exhibits, performances, and lectures centered around food art. You can find more information about the event following this link.

We work everyday with a very creative artist. Max Dana makes extravagant creatures and furnitures, and we don't always get everything she's working on, that's a fact we can't deny. But the Rotating Kitchen by Zeger Reyers is totally over our capacity to even imagine the simple meaning of it. And yes, we know Contemporary Art can sometimes be perceived as a nonsense but still...

Anyway, just have a look at the video. And like someone just suggested, the overall effect would have been better if it had been a rotating toilet; and that, I can easily imagine! ;)

It’s contemporary art so it doesn’t have to make any sense.

But I’m always amazed to see how many people seem so inspired by… nothing :)

Me too, I don’t understand. The program is called “Eating the Universe. Food in Art” so maybe it makes sense in this particular context.

You say Contemporary Art and people act like they do understand something but they don’t. I’m a sculptor and I’m not interested into Contemporary Art since it became only business and managed by five rich people who decide who is in and who is out.

That is a non-sense to me..

Well, I have to say I agree with Mark. It’s a shame to use food this way. In February it will be gross and the smell will be awful. Is that the main purpose of this installation?

Don’t be too rude with the artist, he did what he wanted. It’s his inspiration we must respect that. Although we don’t get it.

JB, I’m sorry but “this is art” is not an argument to do crap. I can also do crap but like Witz said, until you find your manager, it stays crap. After that, it’s called art :x

It’s a conceptual piece of art. Everything is clean and then it gets dirtier and dirtier. But don’t ask me why this is called art, I’m not an expert and I think it’s useless (I’m talking about the rotating kitchen, not art).

Juliette, my sweet Juliette……….. I was being cynical. The point here has nothing to do with starvation. It’s art and take it for what it is. Starvation is a fact and it’s not because of the rotating kitchen. Think about it.

Sama Reader Lissa

I have to disagree Mark. Food art is food, not art. We shouldn’t play with food whilst so many people are starving.

Mark, I just thought for once you talked from the heart, I was wrong once again, my bad. I agree with Lissa, food is not for art nor for playing with.
