Úna Burke: when Art meets Fashion

By Sama Team | November 3, 2009

Sometimes, even if you are not into fashion at all, a designer's work can catch your attention. Úna Burke is one of them. The astonishing picture illustrating this post has been seen by all the Sama Team and we couldn't not share it with you . Just read the Collection description from  Úna Burke Official Website to get a better idea about the Conceptual collection of Fashion Artifacts.   This is a conceptual collection of wearable art pieces, depicting a series of eight human gestures associated with the cause, the physical and psychological effect and the healing stages of human trauma. Sculptural forms are created around the shape of the contorted female body. A number of pieces are reminiscent of prosthetics and medical braces. This signifies the potential for healing within the boundaries of something which inhibits the body [...]   Even more interesting information about the Designer:   Through my work I continually aim to create leather objects which are both visually captivating and technically challenging. They are pieces of wearable art which are indefinable as particular garments, preventing them from being placed into the conventional categories of the fashion industry. They are free to exist just as the objects that they are, interpreted independently by each individual. I use traditional leatherworking techniques to produce these evocative, conceptual creations. In doing this I hope to encourage a new and more modern appreciation for leather craftsmanship and present the possibilities achievable through the use of this material in both the areas of art and of functional design [...]   Úna Burke was Finalist in the IDI Graduate Awards (Institute of Designers in Ireland - October 2009); Finalist in the Accessories category of ‘ITS #EIGHT’ (July 2009); Winner of the Crafts Council of Ireland ‘Future Maker Student Award’ (July 2009); Portfolio presented at the British Fashion Council Portfolio Awards, winning 2nd place for LCF (April 2009); Winner of London College of Fashion ‘Off-Catwalk Award’ for Best Design (January 2009)...   Now just go visit Úna Burke Official Website and enjoy her work which perfectly illustrates Art in Fashion!

I don’t know what to say because I appreciate the work that was done here but I don’t know who can wear it. It is art, indeed.
