E. Coli outbreak in Europe

More than 1100 people infected and 17 people dead in the last two weeks

By Sama Team | June 1, 2011

This is getting very serious with more than 1100 people infected and 17 people dead in the last two weeks. It seems a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria found on cucumbers in Germany is the cause but we can read here and there that nothing is sure as of today. Meanwhile, hundreds of tonnes of cucumbers from Spain have already been destroyed...

Some people in France are sick, some were returning from Germany. The signs and symptoms of E. coli include non-lethal stomach ailments as well as kidney problems, strokes and comas. For now, consumers told not to eat cucumbers, lettuces and raw tomatoes. But again, nobody knows the origin of the deadly bacterial outbreak.

Let's hope things will get better as well as people in hospital. That's when you realize we are a fragile species...

And what if it is not a bacteria from cucumbers? Spanish farmers will be ruined.

This is so sad people are dying…….. What I don’t understand is why it’s not possible to determine the origin of this bacteria. We can do so many things, doctors know so much it’s weird they can’t find the source.

¡Hola! I am both sad for the sick people but also very angry at everyone saying the bacteria comes from Spanish vegetables. We don’t know yet and yet farmers are destroying their cultures!! How can you blame us without proof? If in the next days it is said it is not cucumbers or tomatoes from Spain it will have big consequences for Spain. All this food thrown away while so many people die of hunger :(

Gulove I’ve read there is a possibly elevated risk for pathogens such as salmonella and the deadly E. coli in organic produce. Does that mean we should eating organic food?

I am seriously afraid to eat anything right now. From all the news, it looks like the source is in Germany, Belgium is not far so I feel very concerned..

Forget cucumbers or tomatoes or salad now it is soja! A farm in Germany came back positive to the tests. So now it’s about to boycott soja from Germany. I don’t know why but I think this soja thing won’t last and that maybe we will never know where this bacteria did come from.
