Coco Before Chanel by designer Catherine Leterrier

By Sama Team | October 1, 2009

"Coco Before Chanel", the biopic of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, hit theaters last month in the U.S. Audrey Tautou (Amélie, Da Vinci Code) stars as legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel in this biopic penned by director Anne Fontaine, and based on the Chanel biography L'Irrégulière (The Nonconformist) by author Edmonde Charles-Roux. This is the story of a poor girl who transformed into a legendary fashion designer...

We don't want to talk about the movie itself (it received mixed reviews when it came out in France in April) and we want to focus on costume design. Elle Magazine had an interesting interview with the film’s costume designer, Catherine Leterrier. If you're into costume/fashion design, don't miss this article published on the online edition of Elle Magazine:

"When I did all this research on her younger period, I saw how stunning she was, and how modern. She could be in ELLE magazine now! Madeleine Vionnet, Jeanne Lanvin—they were divine designers, but nobody wanted to look like them. Chanel was a star immediately, even before she was really successful, because she was so good-looking. Everything she had on herself, everybody wanted to have immediately."

In case you want to know more about "Coco Before Chanel", here is the Official Trailer:

I’ve seen the movie and it’s not that bad. It’s mainly a love story, not much about Gabriel Chanel. But it’s still ok.

I love Chanel Haute Couture but I’m not interested at all by seeing this movie.

Tautou is cute but Cotillard is ‘more French’ than Tautou I think.

I had the chance to see this movie a long time ago and Audrey Tautou truly shines as Chanel. It’s not a movie about fashion, it’s learly the life of Gabriel Chanel before she became famous. Sometimes it’s a little boring but the overall movie is good. Not a very good one but we’ll see when the other movie about Chanel comes out: Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky directed by Jan Kounen with the beautiful Anna Mouglalis :)

CaptainMoore, Audrey Tautou is famous but not the biggest star, far from it.

Audrey Tautou is not very famous in France, either is Marion Cotillard. I don’t like both of them, I think they are haughty and doesn’t represent the French talents. We have much better actresses than them in France but they don’t do American movies so nobody knows them excepted French people. Too bad

Sophie Marceau is still very good looking for her age (40) but I prefer a younger actress like Julie Depardieu (daughter of Gerard Depardieu).

I like Julie Depardieu very much!! But she will never be famous in the US, she’s not ‘exportable’ the way Tautou et Cotillard are.

M. Cotillard and A. Tautou look alike.

I vote for Cécile de France, she’s from Belgium, like Benoît Poelvoorde.

Belgium Power :P

Agreed EricNo, Romy Schneider was the perfect actress to me and I was very gald when I learned Max Dana made a portrait of her. I think she also did one of Simone Signoret if I remember well, we talked about it on her blog a long time ago.

I don’t know Julie Depardieu but I know Juliette Binoche and she’s gorgeous!!!
