The Sama Gazette was founded in 2009 by French artist Max Dana. It is a place to share and discuss on various topics: Design, Music, Food, Art, Movies and also organizations / campaigns we support. The editorial content is produced independently; we have been given ‘carte blanche’... More ►
Many Sama Gazette staff members got (RED) Products: Max Dana has a Dell Mini netbook, Uncle_Louis got the Chuck Taylor ALL STAR x Africa Converse, Caramel bought a Special Edition iPod nano and I modestly signed up to the (RED) Newsletter. The Sama Gazette has been (RED) contaminated, that's why we wanted to post a news about (RED).
If you still wonder 'What is (RED)', here is the official answer (read the (RED) Faqs):
(RED) is a business model created to raise awareness and money for the Global Fund by teaming up with the world's most iconic brands to produce (PRODUCT) RED branded products. A portion of profits from each (PRODUCT) RED product sold goes directly to the Global Fund to invest in African AIDS programs, with a focus on women and children.
As for the 'Who is (RED)':
Bono and Bobby Shriver created (RED) to engage the private sector in the fight against AIDS in Africa. Our partners include: American Express (UK only), Apple, Bugaboo, Converse, Dell, Emporio Armani, Gap, Hallmark, Starbucks, and Windows. Discussions are ongoing with other potential partners.
All (RED) Products are listed on this page. You will surely find something to 'Buy (RED) Save Lives'. If you live in New York, (RED) organizes an event on October 4:
On October 4 at New York City’s legendary Carnegie Hall, (RED) unites a world-class line up of artists for a special (RED)NIGHTS concert “Hal Willner Presents: An Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends.” The star-studded evening will feature Laurie Anderson, Antony, Elizabeth Ashley, Bono, Adam Clayton, Andrea Corr, The Edge, Flo & Eddie, Joel Grey, Bill Frisell, Guggi, Scarlett Johansson, Courtney Love, Lydia Lunch, Patrick McCabe, Maria McKee, Shane MacGowan, Eric Mingus, Larry Mullen, Jr., JG Thirlwell, Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright, Chloe Webb, plus special guests. Tickets for the event will go on sale beginning Wednesday, September 16 at 11AM EST via CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800, carnegiehall.org and the box office. As is the case with every (RED)NIGHTS show, a portion of the proceeds from the concert will go directly to the Global Fund (theglobalfund.org). When will (RED) come to Paris? We would be more than happy to deliver great coverage of the event. The Sama Gazette has definitely been (RED) contaminated! ;)
(RED) is great but I think it’s really an American thing, here in France it is not very well known. That’s too bad because they have a good idea and the products are interesting but they really need to address their campaign beyond the United States. IMHO.
Red does a great work fighting Aids in Africa, they saved so many lives already! I think it’s a very good idea to make people buy products for a cause. This is useful money.
RED does a lot for Africa but I prefer smaller organizations like Children Mending Hearts, you can see their work on the field and how they really help people…
Red is all about money and it’s good for Bono’s image, and for U2. Red helps people in need but it’s a VIP organization, very selective. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s the way I see it.
We need people of good will, we already discussed it on previous posts and I had the chance to talk with someone who work with an organization in Ghana, supported by RED. I can assure you RED gives a lot of money so organizations on the field can do a lot of work, mainly to help poor people affected by AIDS.
So Mark you shouldn’t be so ironic, in this case you are the one being naive.
Thanks to the Sama Gazette, again, to write about RED and all the organizations helping other people lives.
Gino you are the exact prototype of someone who appreciates Bono because of RED and not because he’s a great signer (which he is not, but I love The Edge). Good for him and good if it helps people in Africa but I still think it’s awkward..
I am sorry Sam but I liked Bono before he created Red. I think that’s very responsible from him to do that. Why always be so mean when someone tries to help other people?
Seriously, the (RED) Sama is a wonderful idea and we should submit the idea to Max Dana. The Sama are always black, so a red version would be a very unique one.
A Red Sama would be a good thing for Red and it would help get them better known in France. That would be fantastic but I don’t think we can submit the idea that easily…. We got to know someone working at Red first.
