Children Mending Hearts: Gala Fundraiser in Hollywood

By Sama Team | April 12, 2010

Last year, Sama Reader N'Gaye sent us an email about an organization raising awareness about Congo we decided to mention in: RAISE Hope for Congo: Activism you can wear. A few months ago, it's Sama Reader Lissa who commented on Darfur, Congo, Burma: is ‘good will’ enough? about the great work this organization was doing.

She has been following the organization news and events since then and this weekend Lissa sent us an email about a  Gala Fundraiser organized by Children Mending Hearts on  April 16, 2010 in Hollywood.

Here is everything you need to know about this Gala!

About this Gala Fundraiser (read more here):

We are excited to announce our 2010 gala fundraiser will be held April 16, 2010 at The Music Box in Hollywood.  Ben Affleck, along with Grant and Lysa Heslov, will host the event. Funds raised from the event will support the Children Mending Hearts arts & cultural exchange programs with homeless and at-risk children in the United States and refugee children suffering from armed conflict worldwide.  A portion of the evening’s proceeds will also benefit Women for Women International, which since 1993 has given more than 243,000 women survivors of war and other conflicts the financial support, rights education, job skills training and business development skills they need to build a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.

This year’s Host Committee includes Jennifer and Ben Affleck, Michelle Williams, Forest and Keisha Whitaker, Sheryl Crow, Kate Walsh, Quincy Jones, and Hank Azaria.

“It is deeply rewarding to be a part of an organization that makes a profound difference in lives of children, through the power of arts and cultural programs,” said Ben Affleck, Host Committee Member.  “I am thrilled to be part of this year’s event.”

Honorees for 2010 gala: Eve Ensler -Heal the World Award, Luc Robitaille -Humanitarian of the Year Award

Special performances by: Five for Fighting and other musical guests including: Ethan Bortnick, the Dan Band and band from TV featuring Greg Grunberg, Bob Guiney, Jesse Spencer, Adrian Pasdar, Scott Grimes, James Denton

You can purchase tickets or table, you can become a sponsor for this event or donate if you're unable to come. There is also a live auction running at CharityBuzz: if you bid and win, you and three guests will spend 3 days and 2 nights in a luxurious beach side home at El Dorado Golf and Beach Club, an exclusive, private residential club community in Los Cabos, Mexico. Minimum bid is $2,000.00 and the estimated value is $10,000.00. This lot will close on April 16th to be part of the live auction on that evening in LA.

Last but not least: a portion of the evening’s proceeds will also benefit Women for Women International, which since 1993 has been helping women in war torn regions go from victim to survivor to active citizen by providing financial aid, job training, rights awareness and business leadership education. An information worth mentioning since the Sama Gazette is a long time supporter of Women for Women International's actions (thanks to the suggestion made by Max Dana).

Now you know everything, whether you live in Los Angeles or not, you know how to support Children Mending Hearts Arts & Cultural exchange programs with homeless and at risk children in the United States and refugee children suffering from armed conflict in Africa. If you attend the event, please let us know. We would love to hear from you about the special performance by band from TV featuring Greg Grunberg, Bob Guiney, Jesse Spencer, Adrian Pasdar, Scott Grimes and James Denton!

Thank you the Sama Team for this news about Children Mending Hearts! I submitted it very late, the event is on April 16 so hopefully you were quick to post it. It’s very nice you support this organization, N’Gaye told us about it and it’s true I am following what they do for quite some time now. If you go on their website you will read about a trip they made to Congo. Children looked so happy.

I am in Quebec so I will not be able to go but I hope some Sama Readers will go! Thank you!

I visited the site and Lysa Heslov is very committed to her organization. People of good will are always welcome to help other people, even more when it’s about helping children.

I remember this organization, a gala fundraiser is a great opportunity to meet with people and there will be plenty at this one. I would love to see the TV band too :)

They seem to do a great work indeed!

Lissa just sent me an email to let me know about this news and thank you the Sama team for writing about this event. I am sure it will bring people to this party in Los Angeles and it is important it does. Because I searched on the internet and not a lot of sites talk about it, that is too bad :(

I hope J.T will go, support CONGO!!

Anyone wants to put in together to come up with $2 0000 so we spend 3 days and 2 nights in a luxurious beach side home at El Dorado Golf and Beach Club, an exclusive, private residential club community in Los Cabos, Mexico? Come on!! :P

I’m not sure Sienna Miller offered a great publicity to the organization’s work in Congo. I have to agree with Yull on that point although I have nothing against the woman, she’s pretty ;)

Damn, why these great parties are always in the U.S? :(

I’m a big fan of Adrian Pasdar and Ben Affleck… The trip from Belgium to Los Angelos would cost me too much, sorry Mrs Heslov!

Sama Reader Meddi

I want to make a suggestion: why Max Dana doesn’t reserve a table for all the Sama Readers? Prices range from 10,000 to 5,000 dollars. I’m sure Max is also supporting the organization, please, please…….. :P

Sama Reader Moshuo

LOL Meddi! If she reserves tables for all the Sama Readers we’ll need many of them! Plus, even if the tables were reserved, like Witz said, the ticket plane to Los Angeles is very expensive. Lysa Heslov has to make her next gala event in Paris then we will all go ;)

Lysa tells a heartbreaking story…

Ruben St. Hilaire Jr has been living in a shelter in Brooklyn with his mom, and in Januray both of Ruben’s grandparents were killed in the quake in Haiti.

Poor little boy…

Lysa Heslov’s post on the Huffington Post is indeed very sad but she supports this young boy and that’s great! Also check the other online auctions, you can bid to visit the set of “The Office” and enjoy lunch with Rainn Wilson! :P

A gala fundraiser is all about the money since it’s aimed to raise money. Of course if you don’t have money, you just watch. This is frustrating but that’s how it works…

Dittta, I want to join you for this trip but again, France here, so the ticket plane price is too high to come. Sorry, I would truly love to go with you

Me too I came with a great idea: Max Dana should organize a fund raising (preferably in Europe not in the United States) and make live auctions of her work. So we could finally buy her work even if I know the prices will probably be very high.
