RAISE Hope for Congo: Activism you can wear

A month ago, we posted an article titled: The (new) blood diamonds: it ain’t a movie… and we received many emails about it. The situation in Congo is dangerous and we think it’s important to raise awareness about it. John Prendergast is co-founder of the project Enough at the Center for American Progress, and his article: The new blood diamonds was published on the Boston Globe. It was a month ago and we are still talking about the situation at the Sama Office with always the same question: “What we can do, individually?”

That’s also what our Sama-readers kept asking in their comments and maybe we have found a way for you to support the cause: “Dialogue, Start One… Activism you can wear.  Raise awareness in style with our activist t-shirts, jewelry and bags“. The Enough Project has partnered with Dialogue to produce RAISE Hope for Congo t-shirts and jewelry.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each (15%) will support the RAISE Hope for Congo campaign. So now, from your sofa at home or from your office, you can support the RAISE Hope for Congo campaign. You can click here to order the t-shirt.

RAISE Hope for Congo: Activism you can wear

But the Enough Project and its RAISE Hope for Congo campaign is not the only organization trying to raise awareness about Congo. N’Gaye, a regular reader of the Sama Gazette, sent us an email about Children Mending Hearts. N’Gaye is from Congo and he heard about the organization from a related parent still living in the country.

He told us Children Mending Hearts did good out there, and provided a link to the website. Mission statement: “Children Mending Hearts is a global arts exchange between at-risk children in America and children living in conflict zones that educates, empowers and encourages children and gives them a voice, inspiring them to a sense of empathy and desire for peace“.

Maybe we will dedicate a post to this organization later, but in the menatime, if you still wonder how to support these causes as an individual, we invite you to read Max Dana’s post published on her Blog almost 2 years ago: Tall oaks from little acorns grow. Simple and motivating.

Thanks to the Sama Gazette for supporting causes that’s worth it. I was away for a while because as a doctor in Norway, I volunteer to work with needy people, poors, people who live alone, migrants.

But I also feel totally concerned by what’s happening in Congo and like I said in my comment on the Blood Diamond post, I think we should all feel concerned and do what we can to help.

If you can’t help people with money, then give your time. If you don’t have time then buy things like these t-shirts. They don’t cost much and are great support to these organizations.

Thanks for sharing the site with us N’Gaye!

Peace.

This is a good idea to sell products to finance on field action or to support organizations. I use to buy products from the UNICEF website for christmas. What I always wondered was where my money went to, to do what, to help whom?

I remember I commented on the many posts Max Dana has published on her blog about this topic and I am very glad to see the Sama Gazette is following the same path and give importance to this kind of subjetcs we usually read on very specialized websites.

I will buy one of these t-shirts like I bought many others sold by organizations. It’s important we do so and like Erick said, if you don’t have time, you probably have some money to buy something. Max is right: tall oaks from little acorns grow!!

I also remember the discussion we had on the Blood diamond post and some people said that what George Clooney, Don Cheadle and Mia Farrow do is useless. I still think everyone can do something of its own, with time, money or fame and we don’t have to judge that. It’s better than doing nothing. I may buy a tshirt to support RAISE Help for Congo campaign too ;)

Hello there! My first post on the Sama Gazette and I would like to say (with my very bad english, sorry) that it is not acceptable to let people die anywhere in the world. One of my friend worked with the Red Cross and it was the most important experience she had in her life.. I was supposed to join her this summer but I had a family problem.. Anyway, this article is very interesting and I will keep reading you everyday from now! :)

Hey @rnelle, welcome on the Gazette :P

On The (new) blood diamonds: it ain’t a movie post I got the meaning and I asked what I could. So now I know: buying tshirts LOL

Seriously, I can buy a tshirt, or two, or three…. But we will have to buy many tshirts to actually do something.

Thank you the Sama team for the link to Children Mending Hearts!! I am very happy you read the emails sent to you. My aunt still lives in Goma and she’s the one who told me about this organization and the children’s drawings. I thought it was a good idea and that’s why I sent this email to the Gazette.

But I would also like to say that Congo is not only about rape, war and violence. There are people of good will too, people who help each others so please don’t think the whole country is bad, some people are good and they need help. Thank you.

JBKaval, the important is to do something, remember, tall oaks from little acorns grow.

Hulksman, I would love if Max Dana makes tshirts for a cause. She already does a lot, so why not some tshirts? Max, do you hear us? ;)

Hi. Nice discussion. Where is Darfur now? Why don’t we talk about the country anymore? Where’s Clooney? On vacations? He forgot his trip there? I more and more tend to agree with Mark :(

I don’t want to repeat myself but I commented on the other post too and once again, we can’t do anything without being held responsible for someone else’s bad behavior. All we can do is to ameliorate what bad people do to others. And -again-, Clooney is dating some italian bimbo and he may be too busy to think about Darfur. There are no bimbo in Darfur.

¡Hola!

Oh no Juliette you can’t attack G. Clooney on that, it’s unfair. He’s a man and he has a private life too. Of course sometimes it’s weird to see the difference between what he says and what he does but he did a great work to raise awareness on Darfur.

People at Enough Project do great things, I visited the website and read the news. I decided to support the Congo Conflict Minerals Act of 2009 after I read your post about the new blood diamonds.

Thanks for alerting us on that!

I agree with you Muzzi. Even the small organizations I worked with, knew the work done by Project Enough.

I didn’t know Children Mending Hearts but I guess they also do a great work in Congo (that’s what N’Gaye think).

Respect for all these people working for the good of all!

Mark, it’s unfair to criticize people of good will… They do an amazing work! We need them! The world need them!

Ekachit, if you look at the Enough Project home page, Darfur is everywhere. Nodobdy has forgotten Darfur, how could we?!?

Peace.

Juliette you’re damn right about Clooney being too busy with the new bimbo/waitress/actress-wannabe. I don’t judge him but seriously, when we see all these great people working hard for organizations it’s a shame to feel like some other people use their fame to support causes only when they need to. I have nothing against Clooney, seems to be a great guy, but he has to be coherent to some point.

I just wrote an article about Venice Film Festival (remember, I’m a journalist!) and George Clooney was on the red carpet with the new girlfriend. They look good even if they’re far away from the problems Darfur is facing everyday.

But you can’t accuse him of doing his job and having a private life. What shocks me more is that he always gets a beautiful girlfriend just in time for a festival or a premiere…….. Beside that, he did a good job to raise awareness about Darfur, don’t ask him too much ;)

I agree about the very good work Enough Project does, I don’t doubt that. But what Mark said is not stupid… I also have this feeling things are changing fast and we can’t really focus our attention on a specific subject for long.

This afternoon I had some spare time and I read again a post I found very interesting on Max Dana’s Blog: http://blog.maxdana.com/misc/news-cycle-turnover-our-todays-worst-enemy/. I think she is absolutely right when she says news cycle turnover can be our worst enemy and that it can be confusing sometimes.

So Mark, maybe you’re rude and cruel sometimes, but this time, I partly agree with you ;)

Moshuo, I never said I didn’t like Clooney but I think he’s off topic. I mean concerning this news. We are talking about serious people here, working hard everyday.

Arnold mentioned a post on Max’s blog and she also wrote about using fame to support important issues (I don’t remember which post it was) and she teased Clooney and Gore and I agree with her. So I’m not a pro or a cons I just see things happening and I don’t always understand them.

-Off topic Mode On-

George Clooney is a serious topic here in Italy!! Canalis is a velina and she has a very, very hot reputation. She will eat him alive, she has ambition and she said many times she wanted to be famous….. How lucky she met Clooney. Let’s hope the man won’t burn his wings :P
