Berlin Wall: where were you 20 years ago?

By Sama Team | November 10, 2009

Germany celebrates fall of Berlin Wall. 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the night the 'Wall of Shame' came down. The border that separated East and West Berlin from 1961 until 1989 is no more,  and a massive crowd celebrated anniversary of Berlin Wall's fall yesturday.

Angela Merkel, Germany's first chancellor, former Polish president Lech Walesa, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and many others crossed a former fortified border crossing point between East and West Berlin.

Massive dominoes of plastic foam painted by German students have been placed along the former path of the wall that divided the city have been toppled as part of the anniversary celebrations. See the fall in action with the video below.

The fall of Berlin Wall was a huge event, a worldwide one. Do you remember where you were when the wall fell?

I don’t remember very well the fall of the Berlin Wall. I was a teenager and of course it was a huge event but I don’t remember doing anything special that day

It’s so amazing to see Angela Merkel walking cross what was the wall! She lived in East Germany and now she’s Germany’s first chancellor.

This is history and we should never forget that. Walls are useless :x

Juliette, sometimes walls are needed to protect. We need them in Israel but not for the same reason they did it in Germany. It was not for safety.

Simcha: A wall remains a wall, it separates people and it’s not the best way to solve a problem. Understanding and respect is the key, wherever there is a wall, there is no peace.

In 1989 I was too young to remember but I know it was a big event. It’s very cool to create such a commemoration altogether :)

To Simcha – I tend to agree with Meddi about the fact walls separate people. But I also understand you need protection in some way but what is also true is that if nobody tries to move on and talk and understand each other, nothing will ever change……. But the Israel/Palestine wall is a complexe situation :(

Ronald Reagan was there 20 years ago, wasn’t he? So why not Obama in 2009?

Yeah, I remember Reagan’s speech: ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’

So I really don’t get why Barack Obama wasn’t there for the celebration…. Maybe he didn’t want to or maybe he was too busy (Fort Hood). Dunno…

Toby.

Hi everyone! :)

I have a lot of souvenirs from the fall of the Berlin wall. It was such a big event, an unbelievable one!

Moshuo is right to mention Reagan, he did a lot and that’s why I am also baffled Obama decided not to come.

It was a very emotional moment to see them together in Berlin. Visible and invisible walls around the world should all fall!!
