When smoking is like performing oral sex…

By Sama Team | February 23, 2010

We love creative minds. We like when people are inspired. But we were baffled by the last Nonsmokers' Rights organization campaign created by French ad agency BDDP&Fils. We all know how hard it is to quit smoking, and how harmful can be the addiction (about 30% of all cancer deaths are directly related to habitual smoking). But comparing smoking to performing oral sex is unexpected and most of all, illustrated in a very inappropriate way.

As you can see on the picture above, a teenager (two boys and a girl) is kneeling down in front of a clothed man, holding in their mouth a cigarette close to the man's crotch. His hand is pushing on the teenager's head to encourage the fellatio smoking... The ad seems to be more about sexual submission and forced sex act than an instructive way to explain youngsters how addictive can be smoking... The tag line drives the point home: "Smoking is being tobacco's slave" ('Fumer c'est être l'esclave du tabac').

If  BDDP&Fils and the Nonsmokers' Rights organization wanted to get attention, they succeeded. If they really wanted to send a message to young smokers, they hardly reached their goal. At least among the ones we talked to, they all got the sexual thing but didn't understand the analogy between sex and tobacco. Is it encouraging oral sex instead of smoking? Is it about enjoying sexual intercourse with either a (young) man or a (young) woman? Should fellatio be considered as a submission?

If an ad needs an explanation, then it means it clearly missed its point...

I saw it too and I thought it was a joke……. This is so, so stupid! How can you think for even one second this ad will stop young people to smoke?? It has nothing to do with smoke, it was only to create some stupid buzz.

Stupid!

Same for me Moshuo. I didn’t understand what it was about and even after I read the tag line, I didn’t get it either. Like you are being a sex’ slave if you smoke? Anyway……….

That’s horrible for victims of sex assault and harassment.

Sex has nothing to do with smoking.

French are weird sometimes

It’s not french people that are weird, it’s an ad agency who had a stupid idea. Like any other ad agency in the world can have one.

But I agree it’s really stupid……

Is it about enjoying sexual intercourse with either a (young) man or a (young) woman?

Yeah, that’s all I see from this ad!

Look more like forced sex than smoking to me.

I’m not sure this ad would have been published in the US.

Well, I don’t see anything wrong with this ad, maybe it’s because I’m Belgian but I’m not offended by it. Of course it’s sexual but it’s aimed are young smokers so maybe it will talk to them.

I also like they show an homosexual relationship. It reflects our society. But I understand some people can be shocked by this ad.

First of all, like JBKaval said, the problem is the ad agency not the French people. Second I don’t agree with you Witz. Sex is everywhere and in this ad the message is not clear at all. I think Moshuo is right, it was about getting the buzz and that’s all.

This ad is very provocative and that’s how French are sometimes perceived. I am not shocked but it would never have been published in a Russian newspaper :)

PtitJean I was French too ‘before’ ;)

I think Mark’s understanding is the right one: you can’t smoke and have sex at the same time

You’re very funny.

I like Witz’ comment about the same sex relationship. But I don’t think it was the point here ;)

French minister Nadine Morano wants to banish the ad. But it already made the buzz in France, that’s too late now…….

Both teenagers are the same eyes color and hair. Are they brother and sister? Is it about pedophilia? See how stupidly we can understand this ad? Stupid, it is.

I read about this ad in Spain, it’s getting a lot of attention in Europe! I don’t understand it at all but you should know in Spain we also had some very bad ads. One was showing a child in a very suggestive position with an adult. It was very disturbing to say the least :(

So French people are not the only ones to be weird I suppose! ;)

Well said Pilar, I totally agree with you.

Of course France is not the only country with stupid ads! I think this one has got too much buzz and I think the Nonsmokers’ Rights organization should be ashame to spend so much money for such a useless campaign

Good point Juliette. If I was a member of this organization, I wouldn’t be happy my money would be spent for this kind of ad..
