Twitter Sunday: Favorites Tweets @NickKristof

By Sama Team | January 3, 2010

First Twitter Sunday of 2010 and we want to begin with our Favorites Tweets from a respected journalist: Nicholas Kristof . According to his bio on Twitter, he's a New York Times columnist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. But he's also a great journalist that uses interactive tools and social media  (Twitter, Facebook) to build a community and engage the audience.

We at the Sama Team, had no idea who was Nicholas Kristof before this Summer when Max Dana (read her post about journalism: News cycle turnover, our today’s worst enemy?) told us about the book he wrote with Sheryl WuDunn: "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide". This is when we started to read the journalist's stories.

The first Rendezvous of this new year is a serious one with our Favorites Tweets @NickKristof. All our Twitter Sunday are not always that bright, but we want to start the year on a serious note; time will come when we will be much less serious! Now is time to read and learn...

Happy New Year to all! May 2010 bring peace and freedom to Sudan and Congo, China and Iran, North Korea and Burma.

The heroic Liu Di, aka "Stainless Steel Mouse," reported detained in Beijing after standing up for Liu Xiaobo. What guts she has!

I'm in Esteli, Nicaragua, tonight. Good news: no mosquitoes outside. Bad news: they're all in my hotel room.

A wise Honduran businessman told me over dinner that if the rich are going to save themselves, they'll first have to work to save the poor.

My column announces my next Win-a-Trip contest: http://bit.ly/50ZkmV Where should we go, cover?

If you want to participate to the discussion, Nicholas Kristof sent a new tweet about 20 hours ago: "I'm thinking about coverage in 2010. Suggest some good neglected topics/sources for columns: http://bit.ly/557PHU". We may indeed, have a suggestion or two...

You can also read his blog: On the Ground, and become one of his numerous fans on Facebook. Nicholas Kristof's Sunday column is titled: Even Better than Pepperoni Pizza… And it is not about what you think it should be!

Nicholas Kristof’s tweets are very interesting. He knows what he is talking about. And I like the interactive approach he has. I will read him starting today! ;)

I am French and it is the first time I hear Nicholas Kristof’s name but he seems to be a great journalist and I like when a journalist is accessible by his readers. I mean when you can follow his work and discuss.

I will do like Gino and read his column. Thanks for sharing!

If the rich are going to save themselves, they’ll first have to work to save the poor. Indeed. But it’s not what’s happening right now, on the contrary….

The year is starting very seriously on the Gazette ;)

Like Laurent I didn’t know who was this journalist before the Twitter Sunday. I read his Sunday column and it is about very serious topic.

It’s amazing to see how journalism has evolved, Kristof is on Twitter and Facebook. A few years ago it would have been badly perceived I guess.

I doubt 2010 will bring peace and freedom to Sudan and Congo, China and Iran, North Korea and Burma. But it’s a wish, right?

Great!! I remember his name from an article I read in a French magazine and they said his posts about Darfur contributed a lot in raising awareness about the genocide.

Thanks for this first Twitter Sunday of the year ! ;)

Nicholas Kristof has been accused of manipulative emotionalism by Michelle Malkin: http://michellemalkin.com/2009/12/02/unbelievable-update-the-crappiest-nytimes-column-on-obamacare-just-got-crappier/

Is that true, really? …………

Toby.

¡Hola!

Kristof doesn’t seem to be a bad man but to tell a story you have to find the right words to catch one’s attention…

I don’t know this man well but I think it’s unfair to his work.

It’s easy to criticize of course but I don’t know enough of his work to know if it is justified or not.

As a journalist myself (movies journalist, not the same kind), I am very respectful to the ones going on the ground and taking risks. We should all support them even if sometimes they seem to make too much noise, if they do it’s because it’s important we hear them.

IMHO :)

Sama Reader Simcha

That is true! Journalism is important and they have to keep their freedom of speech. I know we already discussed that on a previous post but I agree they need our support.

But I wonder if Kristof really read the comments on his columns……….. And Twitter and Facebook Fans’ comments. Did he read this post from the Sama Gazette? I hope he did, we fully support him here! :)
