Sunday Roundup: Godard, Pi, Revok, Burgerman

By Sama Team | April 19, 2011

Sunday Roundup is a rendezvous on Max Dana's Blog. It sounds like our weekly Friday Digest which Max said it inspired her but we have to admit her news roundup is far more detailed than ours!

You can also read this post on Max Dana's Blog.

Last week I published my first 'Sunday Roundup' post, here comes the second one. The selection of news made by the Sama Team for their weekly Friday Digest on the Sama Gazette is always interesting and I would have also selected several of the articles they have chosen like Obama set to appoint America’s first special envoy to Burma, French ban on Islamic face veil comes into force or Japan ups nuke crisis severity to match Chernobyl.

This week I decided to focus on 'artistic' topics.

Jean-Luc Godard Meets Woody Allen. Open Culture 'The best free cultural & educational media on the web' published a video about Jean-Luc Godard meeting Woody Allen. Unexpected and yet very interesting. The posts says: 'Filmed in 1986, Meetin’ WA is a short (26 minute) film that not many have seen. What you get is Godard, one of the driving forces behind La Nouvelle Vague, in conversation with Woody Allen. The trademark Godard approach to film, the expected dose of Woody Allen neuroses – they’re all there.' Godard is... Godard, true to himself. If you like him and/or Woody Allen, watch this interview.

Some ill-founded joy now. When I read the title of this new movie: 'Life Of Pi', I thought it may be very exciting. My recent post: 'Today is Pi Day. Or maybe we should call it ‘Half Tau Day’ explains why it immediately picked my curiosity. But then I read the post and it became much less captivating... The Deadline (Hollywood) Team writes: 'Tobey Maguire has been cast in Ang Lee's novel adaptation Life of Pi, the Fox movie that is shooting in India ahead of a December 2012 bow. Yann Martel's bestseller centers on an Indian boy who escapes a shipwreck but is stranded on a life raft with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a tiger. Maguire will play a writer who interviews the boy as an adult'. I will stick with Darren Aronofsky's 'Pi' then.

Let's talk about real art now. #Graffiti. Juxtapoz Magazine tweeted about a post from REVOK1 published on his blog. Juxtapoz wrote: 'Kofie represents the perfect balance of talent and hard work. An artists artist'. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, let's make it short and appreciate Kofie's work published on REVOK1's Blog and visit Kofie website as well. Amazing work, indeed!

Artists create. It's called art whether it is painting, sculpture, stencil... or Music. For some artists, their creativity is multifaceted. Two collaborations illustrate that point: #Peter Fowler and Jon Tye (read my post about them) and #Jon Burgerman and Jim Avignon. From Anxieteam website: 'What do you get when you combine the most famous doodle artist in the world with a cult figure in the Berlin art underground, then throw in a ukulele, a bunch of masks, an obsession with salad and an overactive sense of worry? Anxieteam is the new musical collaboration between internationally acclaimed visual artists Jon Burgerman and Jim Avignon'. The musical collaboration is amazing and you have to listen to their music. Check on SoundCloud.

These people are not artists but they are definitely creative. Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay, who work at the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble, EHCI Research Group, created a glasses-free monocular 3D display for iPhone and iPad. 'Head-Coupled Perspective on Mobile Devices. We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction.  It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.' Watch the video on Youtube.

Piece of the Empire State Building, the 102-story Art Deco tower at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street, could be yours! According to the New York Times, the Malkin family, which controls the Empire State Building, is planning to create a publicly traded real estate company featuring the building. 'The skyscraper draws tens of thousands of tourists from across the globe every year to its 86th-floor observatory, 1,050 feet above the city streets. If the Malkin plan is successful, New Yorkers, and anyone else for that matter, will be able to buy stock in the company that owns the Empire State Building, much as Wisconsin residents bought stock in the Green Bay Packers...'. Everything is for sell, why not the Empire State Building?

In French now.
