DailyMotion gets €7.5 million from French State

By Sama Team | October 22, 2009

Dailymotion is the French equivalent to Youtube, and it was launched 4 years ago. The site has 60 million users, 1 billion videos viewed a month, and it is offering both amateur and professional content, with contextual advertising. Like on Youtube, you can watch serious video as well as more weird video. The site is independant, but will it stay this way?

Many questions are raising since the organism of the French State: FSI (Fonds Strategique d’investissement) just invested €7.5 million into Dailymotion. Will Dailymotion stay independant from the politics? Will there be some kind of filter applied to the content? Let's not get paranoid but just be aware. We want the services provided by Dailymotion not be biased. We will see.

Dailymotion is already filtering its content, it can only get worse….

Freedom of the press is an issue in many countries, not only in France or in Russia but in some countries there is no freedom of the press at all x:

Oleg, yes it’s true Russia is not the worst country in the world but journalists are killed, not in France, not that I know of. And yes that’s a shame.

I don’t think Dailymotion already applies filter on its content, excepted for official and coyrighted content. But I think the fact French State is now a shareholder of the company will change some things, even if the people at Dailymotion say it won’t. And that’s a big problem.

France is not like Italy yet but the funds could have invested the money in any other French hi-tech company and they choose a media company. It’s not random.

Youtube and Dailymotion are money pit.

Those funds should invest their money where it’s needed, but they won’t get any return on investment. So they’re not interested.

Moshuo, I also think they knew what they were doing when they decided to invest in Dailymotion……. Ce n’est pas un hasard!

J.T. Brown, I agree, it’s a money pit. So many companies get money only to survive, after all these years, they should be profitable!

I agree with you too Thomas. It’s enough to finance companies that are not profitable or don’t even try to be. It’s our money this funds is investing for the French State, damn it!
