The Hope for Darfur – Justice in Sudan Rally

Sunday, May 15, 2011. 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Washington, D.C.

By Sama Team | May 12, 2011

On this post last year we announced The Hope for Darfur – Justice in Sudan March in Washington, sponsored  by The Darfur Interfaith Network. This week-end  the event is back and will be on Sunday, May 15, 2011, starting at the Metropolitan AME Church, 1518 M Street, N.W. and will proceed to the White House at Lafayette Park.

This year's message is:

We encourage the U.S, along with the international community, to renew and strengthen the mandate for UNAMID (United Nations/African Union Peacekeepers). The international community led by the United States should push for the Government of Sudan to provide unimpeded access for peacekeepers and humanitarian workers to areas where fighting has taken place and where internally displaced persons have fled and are suffering.

Rally Speakers:

• Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards
• Ruth Messinger
• Mr. Joe Madison
• Mr. Mark Hanis
• Pastor Dr. Derrick Harkins
• Mr. Mohamed Yahya
• Rabbi Bruce Lustig
• Pastor Heidi McGinness
• Rev. Dr. Jeff Krehbiel
• Ms. Niemat Ahmadi

You can register for the rally on this page. If you can't join the event, you can donate to Help Raise Money for Humanitarian Aid and Advocacy Efforts in Sudan here.

As you can read on En Route To Sudan, many issues are still unresolved and are left to be worked out between North and South Sudan, and on the disputed Abeyei region of Sudan. A few days ago more than 80 people were killed when rebels attacked cattle herders in Southern Sudan. The situation there is still very fragile so we should not look away!

I am so gload Americans still try to change things and take action. I remember last year, I was upset nothing was done in Europe and this year again, no word about any event to support Darfur.

What a pity :(

Europe (and France) prefer to focus on Libya. Sudan and Darfur are far away and the topic has never been on the front pages here.

I wish I lived in Washington to join the rally.

I agree in France nobody really cares about Darfur, not even Urgence Darfour. Like last year I checked their website and nothing new since a year… It’s a really a shame.

Maybe Max should do something. Not the first we suggest it but it may be a solution. I would join the march in Paris if she organizes something!

Thomas, you’re so right, Cannes captivates everyone. The Red Carpet and Angelina Jolie, no surprise Darfur can’t compete with them in the media ;)

But seriously more should be done about Darfur and also Burma. Don’t forget Burma, and Congo too….

Elie Wiesel’s words are so inspiring!

“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment – become the center of the universe.”

My comment from last year: Their goal is to encourage people to stand up and they succeed in doing just that.
