Chicago: Walk with Darfur on July 9!

Support peace and education for the people of Darfur

By Sama Team | July 7, 2011

In May we mentioned The Hope for Darfur – Justice in Sudan Rally that took place in Washington, D.C.; today's post is about a walk-a-thon in Chicago organized by Darfur Dream Team.

The 3K walk along Lake Michigan, followed by speakers, will take place on Saturday, July 9, 2011 on Diversey Harbor, Chicago, IL.

Participants will gather at 11:30AM at the Diversey Harbor Grove (Barry Ave and Lake Shore Drive West), depart for the walk-a-thon at noon, and re-convene for the rally and speaker program at 2PM.

Details about the walk-a-thon:

As South Sudan celebrates its independence on July 9th, Youth United for Darfur -- the Chicagoland coalition of high shools and colleges working together for peace and education for the people of Darfur -- will hold its inaugural Walk with Darfur [...] Following the walk-a-thon, the program will include a rally in support of peace in Sudan. Speakers will include Sudanese Community Association Executive Director Malual Awak, and Meghan Higginbotham, a Dream Team Official from the anti-genocide group the Enough Project, along with prominent elected officials and Chicago sports figures [...] The money raised from the walk-a-thon pledges and suggested donations of $25 will support Darfuri refugee education through the Darfur Dream Team Sister Schools Program. In addition to raising funds, the event will promote peace in Sudan's Darfur region, and celebrate the official recognition of South Sudan as an independent nation...

If you want to participate, you can register for the Walk. We hope this event will be a success!

Why are Americans always organizing events like these ones and we don’t have any in Italy or in Europe? Puzzling..

I don’t know why people outside of the U.S seem not to care about Sudan. Honestly this website is the only one (French based) talking about what is happening in Sudan, on a regular basis.

US has interests in South Sudan, that’s why Karmitto. European countries don’t. Simple.
